Background on Jonathon McBrideJonathon grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a young boy, he played soccer and enjoyed reading. He attended North Central high school where he was on the soccer team and was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper called The Northern Lights and a news website NCHS Live!. Jonathon spent much of his time writing stories, conducting interviews, and designing pages for the The Northern Lights and NCHS Live!. Under Jonathon's leadership, the paper and the news website won journalism awards. Much of the rest of his time was spent working at the local yogurt shop and selling Christmas trees at the neighborhood garden store. At the time of his selection as a Foundation Scholar by the Chicago Circumnavigators Chapter, Jonathon was a junior at Northwestern University studying Social Policy and Biological Sciences. In addition to academics, Jonathon works at the Allada Neurobiology Lab doing research on circadian physiology. Jonathon is also the President of Northwestern Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault (MARS). This is a peer education group made up of men who work to facilitate discussion on campus in hopes of creating a safer and healthier campus community. Jonathon McBride's Research TopicClearly Jonathon's experience as the President of MARS inspired his research project. During his speeches to incoming freshmen about what to expect on campus, how to stay safe, and how to be healthy during their first year on campus, he began to wonder if programs like this existed at other universities including universities outside the United States. How do their programs compare to what MARS is doing at Northwestern? One question lead to another and he wrote a proposal to investigate the policies and resources that other universities have on sexual assualt. Are there ideas that have been developed in other countries that could be applied to Northwestern? Jonathon will travel to six countries to conduct his research on The American Sexual Assualt Crisis in a Global Context: Policies, Resources, and Student Engagement. The project's goal is to create an evaluation of the current practices universities employ to address sexual assualt in hope of creating better policies and safer and healthier university communities. Itinerary of CircumnavigationJonathon will be visiting these 6 countries during his circumnavigation in the summer of 2015.
